Gynaecomastia Surgery
This is the benign enlargement of the male breast. It is a very common condition and the first step is to exclude a potentially reversible cause, through a thorough history and physical examination.
This is the benign enlargement of the male breast, with excess fat and firm glandular tissue extending concentrically beyond the nipple. It is very common and present in 33 – 41% of normal men aged 25 – 45 years and up to 60% in men over the age of 50. Physiological (normal) gynaecomastia occurs in newborns, during puberty, with aging and excess weight. It can however also be associated with certain medications, illnesses, hormone imbalance, and some genetic conditions (pathological).
It is therefore very important to differentiate between a physiological cause and a pathological one before proceeding with treatment. A thorough examination is important to ensure there are no discreet masses in the breast and also a set of blood tests may be required.
Although a degree of weight loss and exercise undoubtedly helps, this condition can persist requiring surgical correction. In the majority of cases, this involves a combination of liposuction and direct removal of the excess breast gland behind the nipple through a small scar under the areola. In severe cases, where there is a lot of excess amount of skin in the breast, a larger scar is necessary to remove this.
