Skin cancer surgery
Skin cancer surgery involves two concepts, the removal of the cancer and subsequent tissue reconstruction. In the majority of cases this is no different to a simple cosmetic skin procedure, where the skin is closed directly, performed in an outpatient setting. On occasion however, if the lesion is large and in an area with little skin laxity to allow for direct closure, then other reconstructive options are required. This is usually post Mohs surgery in the face, or after larger excisions in the lower leg. The use of local flaps or skin grafts might be necessary with careful planning during our consultation. As a general rule, absorbable sutures are used for surgery on the body and removable sutures for the face.
